Help...dog not eating...

Bones82 Mar 11, 2008 11:07 AM

I have a 11 week old pure bred German Shepard that I picked up last Friday. He was very relaxed and has been ever since I brought him home. He was on Pedigree Puppy Chow but I have been slowly swapping him over to Blue Buffalo. The only way I can get him to eat is to mix chopped turkey or chicken liver in with his kibble. He will not touch the food otherwise. He sucks down a ton of water and does nothing but lay down all day unless I go outside. He follows me every where I go and when I get there he just lays down. I know he was not pulled from his mom until Friday so I don't know what kind of effect that has. He weighs 21 pounds and turned 11 weeks yesterday. Any help would be appreciated.

I just got back from the vet. They did a parvo test and a fecal exam. Both of the tests came back negative. The vet said there was a possibility that the parvo cannot be detected yet. He said I would know within the next 24-48 hours whether he has parvo or not. The vet also suggested a tube of vitamins and also some quality canned puppy food. He received a shot of antibiotics and also Clavamox to take at home. He was wormed with Canex. Overall he was still rated in the average weight range and healthy except for a slightly dry coat and the lack of appetite. I have pedialyte and he took 3/4 a can of Purina One canned food (not the best but at least he took it). I gave him several squirts of pedialyte and will keep an eye on him. The breeder said he was probably having separation anxiety due to him being with his mom and sisters until I picked him up last Friday.

Stress and all the changes can make a puppy lose appetite. Hopefully things straighten outin a few days. Probiotics may also help out with the transitions.

Keep in mind it hasn't been a week yet. His world was he knew it was with his mom and littermates. It doesn't take much of a change to upset a dog and only being 11 weeks old he is probably a little stressed what with the new surroundings and sounds he has to get used to. It's good that all of the tests have come back negative... give him another few days or a week and I'm sure he'll be feeling much better about things.

He definitely will chow down on some canned food. I have been giving him mixed canned and dry. He played outside yesterday with a ball. I believe he is doing better already. Hopefully he will continue to get stronger.
