too many eggs?

xpurplex Mar 14, 2008 03:27 AM

I feed my dogs boiled eggs regularly, but I wonder how many eggs are too much?
I have a 66lb shar pei mix that I feed three, a 50lb lab mix I feed one, a 5mo 30lb pit mix that gets 2-3, and a 2-3mo 18lb pit mix that eats 1-2. I feed them these amounts every week. The puppies eat Nutro large breed puppy food, and the older two eat Avoderm Naturals. Every once in a while I'll mix it with yogurt or cottage cheese, and/or a portion of canned green beans and sliced carrots.
They aren't allowed to eat kibble whenever they want and are fed the recommended amounts on the bag. The only one that is slightly over weight is my lab mix, but not by much. Since switching them to these foods, their hair is incredibly soft and silky.

Is there an amount of eggs that would be detrimental to their health?

Those amounts sound fine. There is some benefit to cooking the white of the egg, so it's good that you are using boiled eggs.

For those sized dogs that many eggs a week is not an issue. You may want to include the shells of the eggs as well just because the calclium to phosphorus ratio is a tiny bit off, but not alarmingly so. I suppliment my dogs with extra protein on an almost daily basis. For your lab you may want to reduce his kibble amounts just a bit when you do give the eggs, but beyond that keep it up.
