Getting an Aussie puppy

ToshaMc Mar 15, 2008 06:23 PM

Thought I'd better ask the experts ...

We have adopted an beautiful blue merle girl that will be joining our family at the end of the month. We are preparing for her arrival and I was wondering if there were any preferred toys that aussies like and if there were certain things that should be avoided. I am assuming chew toys and maybe some fetching toys would be a good start - I've already sent a stuffed animal to her which she sleeps with and it will be accompanying her on her flight here so she'll have a little familiarity in her new home.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! She is gorgeous! Congrats on your new pup! I don't have Aussies but I think you're on the right track. Since Aussies are herding dogs it's good to get toys that she can play and chase. The chew toys are also good for when the teething and normal puppy chewing begin.

You've got the basics down. Each dog beyond that is individualized in their tastes so you'll have to learn as you go. For teething I used raw carrots for my dogs- a good texture to chew and they could be cold enough to be soothing on the gums.

Get your puppy enrolled in a puppy socialization class and teach house manners from th start. Aussies are smart and can be aloof so you will want to socialize well.

Enjoy your new pup and come back and ask questions anytime.
