Mucous in poop

abukuchick Mar 18, 2008 10:03 PM

My boys (2 chihuahuas who are almost 2) seem to have very sensitive tummies. They usually have a good solid poop in the morning, but the second (and sometimes third) one of the day are usually poop (some solid, some soft but not diarrhea) followed by a pile of mucous. This happens most days but not every day. I was giving them pumpkin, but haven't for a while and I'm going to grab some tomorrow. They eat Innova Evo Reduced fat food and also get chicken strips and treats. Any thoughts on what is causing this or how I can prevent it?

Mucous in the stool shows irritation in the intestines. If both dogs have mucous, I would be suspicious of something they are eating. Stop all the things you are currently giving them, both food and treats, and feed only baked chicken for one week and see how their stool appears during that week.
