Overweight barf-ing Pom

RoxyBabette Mar 30, 2008 07:07 PM

I've switched my two dogs, a 5 year old Heeler mix and a 2 year old Pom x Chihuhua, to raw about 5 months ago. They love it and are doing very well but my Pom has gained quite a bit of weight. She weighed 4 lbs before the switch. I noticed she was gaining weight so I reduced her portions and she is getting about 50 grams per day now, but I'm kind of just eyeballing it. It doesn't seem to be helping and she is constantly SO hungry.
I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any advice on a good meal plan for her to help lose some weight? My other dog is doing wonderful and is a perfect weight. Any info is appreciated!

Generally speaking a raw diet should be about 2% of the total body weight fed daily. Not doign math this late at night, but I actually do weigh out my dog's meals on a scale so I know how much they are getting. If mine are getting a bit chunky on it, I cut back, increase exercise and add cooked green beans or canned pumpkin to add a bit of bulk. FOr a dog that size it would be a tbsp or so.

More exercise, less food. The problem with new raw fed dogs is that the owners give too much food (they were used to dry or canned food which is 90% trash and fillers). Raw fed dogs need so much less food. I dont even use the 2%, 3 %, or whatever, I feed what looks like it is enough, and adjust their intake as I go everyday.
Actually feeding raw is so easy, mine eat alot less than what is suggested by the percent by dody weight, both are big muscular, and built like body builders with fur.
