Asparagus and Sweet Potatoes

sfemz Apr 11, 2008 02:11 AM

I have two girls, a 13 year old English Setter and a 2 year old West Highland White Terrier. This question mostly concerns the Westie. She LOVES sweet potatoes, asparagus as well as bananas and oranges. I dehydrated some sweet potato chips and some asparagus spears for low calorie treats. She loves them. She will also eat asparagus spears raw straight from the garden. She has been eating these with no stomach upset. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't any reason why I should not be feeding her these vegetables and fruits. I had heard that onions and raisins should be avoided. Are there any other no-no fruits or vegetables that I should know about? Thanks.

There are no reported problems with asparagus or sweet potatoes in dogs. Raisins and grapes have caused kidney problems in a small minority of dogs, but the cause is not known. Onions, in very large amounts, over some period of time, may cause anemia in dogs, at least in theory, but has not been a significant source of problems. Small amounts of onion in a dog's diet is not a problem.
