My BC herds bikers and bladers-help

crystal2007 Apr 25, 2008 08:28 PM

My Border Collie is still trying to jump bikers and rollers blading and even people on a trail I use. She sometimes doesn't (when she is more tired), but for the most part she still does. I've tried everything but she just won't listen. I've tried the treats, showing her a toy, having her sit and stay but she tries to jump as soon as the people get closer. Any suggestions?

If she's not on a leash or long line, keep her on one. You will need to do that for at least 6 weeks. During that time, work on the attention exercise as well as recalls. Call her to you the minute you see anything she even might chase. You need to develop a split-second response to your calling cue. Remember, Border Collies are bred to be able to do that!

Read the articles I wrote on Attention, Please! and the one on Barking at the link with my name below. Titles are in alphabetical order. Though she's chasing and perhaps not barking, that method will work.

In addition to what Kathy said, you really need to be very patient and consistent. This behavior will take a long time to resolve because it's very rewarding to the dog. You said when she's tired it doesn't happen, so when she doesn't do it are you rewarding very lavishly for that behavior? Punishment isn't going to work at all for this because the dog is going to a very aroused state when chasing so don't add to that emotion. If you can't get your dog's attention when a biker goes past, increase your distance from the stimulus until you can. If that means for 2 or 3 weeks you walk early or late at night so there is little to no contact with bikers, then that will help and you can work on attention with less distraction.
