My Pug diagnosed with Thrombocytopenia

sethowen May 25, 2008 05:54 PM

Hi all...I'm new here. Just poking around the internet looking for info. My pug Rosie has a history of Mast Cell Tumors which we have always removed with good results. Just recently i noticed blood in her stool, so i took her to the vet. The vet performed some bloodwork on her and her platelets came back severely low. She is anemic. They performed an ultrasound on her spleen, liver and kidneys and did not see anything remarkable that could be causing it. Now she wont walk much to go to the bathroom, but she is eating ok. She jumps up for food. Not sure what to do about this. Has anyone had an anemic canine? She is on famotadine, vit K, prednisone and vit b complex with iron.
thanks
seth

There are 2 problems you need to correct right now; the bleeding and replacing the lost blood. Has your dog gotten vaccinated within the last 2 months? This may be the cause of the thrombocytopenia, as it is often autoimmune. This should be treated by a homeopathic veterinarian. In order to stop the bleeding, you could add the chinese herbal combination Yunnan Pai Yao to your current protocol. In order to replenish the lost red cells, feed as much beef liver as your dog will eat, for as long as she will eat it. In the future, it is advisable to avoid any more vaccinations so as not to cause a recurrence.

thank you. Rosie has not been vaccinated recently. we met with a holistic vet. we are weening her onto a raw diet and away from her current hills diet. currently she is eating some raw beef liver along with Pet-Go vitamins some chinese herbs & Phosphorus 30c homeopathy. thanks again for all of your support.
