Is Heartguard ok to give to my dog, or should I consider avoiding it? Are there any safer alternatives?

Heartgard appears to be safe for most dogs other than Collie types. However, it is not necessary to give it all year; once every 45 days after the appearance of mosquitoes is sufficient, starting 45 days after the first mosquitoes in the spring.
