Arthritis

What is the best treatment for an old dog with arthritis? Are the medicines safe? There was so much negativity about Rimadyl(sp)so I was wondering if there is anything better. It would be good if there was time release medicine for a dog like people.

See your veterinarian. If the dog is in a lot of pain, a short course of NSAID may be indicated, just a short course at first. It can really help.

And also start Cosequin. This is the tested, proven version of glucosamine chondroitin. It can make an amazing difference. NSAIDS are all risky, which is why it is best to limit the time as much as possible--but you need to relieve the dog's pain, too. Cosequin was wonderful for my arthritic dog for the last year of his life. It is somewhat expensive, but worth it. And unlike NSAIDS, Cosequin is NOT risky for the dog.

Thanks Kathy,

We are seeing the vet next week, just wanted to get some opinions so I can make an informed decision. My dog is on Cosamin which is the same as Cosequin. I guess I will double his doseage after I make sure he has no blood sugar problems. In people, those supplements are not recommend for people with diabetes. I am also going to look into accupuncture.

Cosamin may not be the same as Cosequin. Be sure to check that out. Vitamins are not very regulated, and it is entirely possible to be giving an inadequate dose and not know it. Cosequin is tested. It works!

Kathy, Cosamin is the same, made by the same company, but for people. My vet told me that months ago when I asked. It is just cheaper to buy online.
Another question - someone told me there are shots for dogs with arthritis something sounding like aqualine. Ever hear of that?

Yes, I have heard of the shots. I think the ones I heard about were given right into joints. Adequan, maybe? I'd try Cosequin first, and a short course of an NSAID.
