Mange Treatment not working

podiecat Jul 10, 2008 08:15 PM

Hi Dr Tobin,

After daily doses of oral ivermectin for a month now, my pup still has mange and the staph infections keep popping up. Can a Herx type reaction happen with this treatment? I ask this because now several of her toes are completely hairless, while some areas on her face look better, some the same. I'm taking her in for another skin scrape in a few days but I know she still has it. When the itching gets intense, which it has been lately with the heat and humidity, I give her homeopathic Sulphur which helps a bit but not enough. Is there a more reliable treatment? She is seven months old now and has had mange for at least four months.

Thanks....

Do have a new scraping done to determine if your dog still has mange. If so, you could switch to Selemectine, but it will be a lot more expensive. Put your dog on a diet of fresh meat, bones, flax seed oil and yogurt or a probiotic and see if that helps.

Thanks, Dr Tobin,

We just got back from the vet and she thought that the ivermectin dose was not high enough because my pup gained ten pounds. So she's now on a higher dose and back on the antibiotic for at least a month for the staph. I am giving her raw bones and kefir. Should I give her raw chicken instead of her premium grainless kibble?

Thanks.....
