Peeing on the bed!

RedRoseVertigo0 Jul 24, 2008 08:44 PM

I have had my adopted 7 year old JRT for 4 months and she has some big issues. She was owned by an elderly couple who fed her people food and thought the 1/4 mile walk to the mailbox was sufficent exercise. She is also badly socialized and bullies other dogs. The biggest problem is she pees on my bed. I let her sleep with me at night and it seems unnatural that she would pee where she sleeps. Help!

One thing to do is clean the mattress with a bacterial enzyme odor eliminator product such as Nature's Miracle--very, very deeply. Then if there are any further accidents, pour undiluted clear vinegar deeply in. If you want to sleep on the bed before that dries, put a bunch of folded terry cloth towels over it and night-night! But leave it open to the air for awhile other than your sleeping times.

Vinegar seems to repel dogs from wanting to use that spot again. No comment to the dog when you apply this, but you can let the dog watch. Hopefully your trainer has taught you that punishment doesn't work for things like this. It just doesn't!

I would suggest crating the dog at night. How about start by doing that for two weeks, and then try on the bed again?

I would definitely have a urine sample checked by your vet to see if she has a urinary tract infection. Could it be that she's just leaking urine when she sleeps and doesn't even know it? Sometimes spayed females have a problem with this and hormones help.
