Does anyone show in the UKC venue?

(I didn't ask for lecture that UKC isn't legit showing or the titles are bogus, and only AKC is the only real titles worth earning.)

Hi,

The word is spelled conformation. Often confused with confirmation.

The dog is judged by the written standard of the breed. Does the dog conform to the breed standard? This is what the judge is suppose to ask his/herself while evaluating the dogs in the ring.

I've only shown in AKC events. I've heard of other types of events catching on these past few years, but I choose to prove my breeding program in American Kennel Club events.

I too noticed that this forum is not used often by Doberman breeders. I don't visit other forums, but sure there are several out there for Dobes. It is too popular of a breed not to have them in othere lists and forums.

Thank you for correcting my typo.... check your own spelling next time (othere). Yes, my bitch does conform to the breed standard and I know what the judge's job is.

I know there are many differences between the venues, but if it's an avenue for someone to do something with their dog, all the power to them, regardless of which venue they exhibit in.

I see the UKC does not allow Professional Handlers. I know some AKC exhibitors that handle their own dogs, but it's usually only if it is Breeder/Owner. But I think they all should have to be handled by their owner or someone of the immediate family.

Now I remember why I never participate with Doberman forums.

The UKC has been around for something like 110 yrs. It's not something that's just popped up over the past few yrs.

I don't have dobes, but I have shown in UKC conformation events. I don't see many dobes in UKC events, but that could just be my area.

If your dog conforms to the breed standard (UKC breed standards can be a bit different than AKC), your dog should do fine at a UKC event. If you don't have competition in your breed, you will have to win in Groups or even BIS ring (depending on how big the group is) to get competion wins towards a CH title.

I enjoy UKC events overall. It is well suited to young dogs and/or inexperienced handlers. Also, I'm fine with some judges education about what a breed should look like- so if I've got a great dog, I want them to see it.

Thanks Chelle! So many people tell me they prefer the UKC, mainly because it is more geared toward dog & owner apposed to hiring someone (PH) to do it for you.

On the other side, owners of AKC handled or handlers tell me UKC titles are too easy to obtain, and means absolutely nothing if they don't earn an AKC title.

Am I wrong, for saying who cares what venue it is, as long as people are doing SOMETHING with their dog(s)? Besides, it certainly doesn't look easy to earn a Grande Championship...

It's sometimes not that "easy" to get even a CH in UKC. If your dog does not meet the standard, I've seen more than one judge withhold ribbons on a dog so they can't compete in groups. It doesn't happen very often, but you certainly aren't going to champion a dog with a disqualifying fault in UKC anymore than you would in AKC. The fact that you can't "hide" some flaws via grooming in UKC vs. AKC also makes things a tad more difficult if you have a dog with a pigment or coat texture problem. Also, Grand Championing a dog in UKC IS very difficult.

Overall, I believe a UKC conformation title is a valid title- although my own breed club tends to have similar opinions about it as your club. If the dog does not merit the title, they won't get it in UKC any easier than they would in AKC. Yes, it tends to take longer to get an AKC Championship on a dog- typically and it tends to cost more as well.

One other thing- I don't believe a dog that got it's AKC Championship in it's first 3 shows with 3 majors and at only 6 months tells me that much about the dog's merit either. That same dog could look terrible at 2 years old. Same holds true for a dog that took 5 or 6 years to get it's AKC Championship (granted I think there are some breeds that it may actually take this long to build majors and/or competition is fierce- in my breed it should not). So really, breeders do need to show their dogs and have them evaluated, but there's more than just a "CH" in the dog's name that makes it worthy as a breeding dog in my opinion.
