Senior Chihuahua with Heart Murmor

MandyLyn Aug 12, 2008 07:46 PM

Jenny is an 11 yr. old Chi who lived in a puppy mill until she was 5. She has a "grade 5" heart murmor. and she has 2 infected teeth, but can't have anesthesia to have them pulled. What would help to rid her of the infection. She is on Clavamox, 1/2 twice a day. She weighs 7 lbs. An untra sound has been suggested to find the cause of the heart murmor, and tell if med. will help it. She eats, runs, and plays with no visable symptoms.

For the infected teeth, give homeopathic Silica 30c once a day along with the Clavamox, but you might consider switching to Clindamycin instead of Clavamox. For the heart murmur, give Jenny CoQ10, Hawthorn, Ribose and Jiao Gu Lan. Feed her some raw beef heart daily, along with cod liver oil.

Thank You Dr. Tobin. As I am completely new to this type of medication, can you please tell me what amounts are safe to give to a 7 lb. Chihuahua daily? We have 2 other small dogs, 12 & 18 lbs. who sometimes eat from each others dishes. I am assuming none of this will harm them. Correct? Thanks.

The clindamycin liquid you can get from your vet. Silica 30c is available from a health food store; crush one pellet and add it to the bottle of clindamycin drops. Give 30 mg twice a day of Coenzyme Q10, one capsule each meal of Hawthorn berries, Ribose, and 1000mg of cod liver oil. Jiao gu lan is hard to find, but if you get it, it will likely be in the form of chinese pills, of which you should give 2 twice a day. Beef heart can be given ground up, about a tablespoon daily.

Dr. Tobin, Jenny developed a large amount of fluid in her belly. Our vet put her on 3 medications; Enacard 2.5mg, once a day: Vetmedin,1.25mg, twice a day; Lasix 12.5mg, one half pill twice a day.
Today her breathing seemed more labored and we took back. He drained fluid from her belly. He said her lungs are still clear and her breathing was labored becsuse she has so much fluid in her belly it is pressing the diaphram against the lungs making it hard for them to expand. And he increased the Lasix to 3 half pills a day.
My question to you is: Can she still take the things you prescribed for her along wiht the meds he prescribed? He said she could still take the Silica 30 for her teeth and Cod Liver Oil, but he is not familiar with how the others would react with these meds.
Thank You,
Jenny's Auntie
