For those who question their breed...

SHvar Aug 16, 2008 10:45 AM

DNA testing, I decided to try it after 19 months of raising our husky mix.
I noticed that some websites had examples shown of dogs that looked obviously like a mix of certain breeds, but in reality were mixes of other breeds you would never expect.
We got the results of the test back a few weeks ago, our Koda is 37-74% siberian husky, 36-21% labrador retriever, and 20-17% german shepard.
It cost $52 to buy the test, some range up to $115 for mouth swab tests you do at home. Blood tests from your vet sent to the labs that sponsor them cost around $199 or more to give the same or less breeds in the list.
These tests only identify American bloodline purebreds in the dogs background (ie AKC bloodlines not CKC, etc).

DNA testing would be the definitve way to find out just what breed of dog there is in a mix breed... for those that really need to know.

Interesting. I'd probably do it if I had a mixed breed dog just out of curiosity and because it's available now.

Kind of fun- I've read about the test and thought it was reasonable overall. I'd say 37 to 74% husky is a fairly wide range of probablility. Still, One can see the husky in there. Lab and GSD? I don't think I'd have picked those- granted I'm terrible at the guess the breed game. This kind of suggests a purebred husky got together with a lab/shepherd mix. Since huskies are prone to wandering, that's a likely story. Thanks ofr sharing the results with us. Do you believe the results based on the beahviors you see in your dog?

Sibes are independant minded, so they come to you when they feel like it for attention, then demand it.
My mix physically is built like a German shepard, yet has the husky big strong hips and back. He acts very much like a lab or shepard in that he follows you around and has to be right with you everywhere, all of the time, up against you.
He also retrieves naturally, loves water, to swim. He has the shepard big huge teeth, and a coat thats inbeween in length.
He has the long legs of the black lab, the floppy ear tips, and some of the facial shape of the lab.
Hes got the energy from both lab and husky. A great pet dog, also fearless when it comes to other animals and approaching people.
