I've Got to Get to the Bottom of This

colorfulcritters Aug 28, 2008 09:15 AM

My dog's had a skin problem for months now. Her hair's fallen out in some places and is scaley and dry. She won't stop scratching either, has bloodshot eyes, icky fur.

I've got to get down to the bottom of this problem. I've spent about $100.00 on her for medicine, have taken her to vets, some say scabies others allergies. They give me medicine and it helps, but then the problem always returns.

I want to make her skin healthy for good, find out what on earth she has. Can anyone tell me? I just can't afford to buy her medicine anylonger.

You may need to seek the help of a canine dermatologist to get to the root cause of the skin problems. Had the previous vets done any specific tests... seems like they should be able to agree on the problem. At the very least the problem could be caused by allergies. I would recommend having a blood allergy test done to know for sure. It could be as complicated as environmental allergens or food allergens to being caused by allergic reactions to fleas etc.

A veterinary dermatologist is a good bet. One more thing to do before that is have blood taken and sent to one of the OFA approved labs for thyroid check. You need results on Total T4, Free T4 by equilibrium dialysis, and Free T4. If the dog has a low thyroid, supplementing with the right dose of thyroid medication can show you a miracle!

Thanks, I did some research and have come up with the same conclusions. Skin problems in dogs are so vast, however, that it's daunting. The itching in my dog seems to come and go though, so I wonder if it's some of the shampoos I'm using. Another problem is, I'm overseas, in TW, which complicates matters. But next time I'm going to ask for blook/skin tests.

Thanks, but I just wonder how long a dog can endure these conditions, since I can't take her to a vet right now. Any home remedies you all know?
