cephalexin & prednasone

We just adopted a new bulldog mix who needed a home. he's healthy, but apparently prone to skin irritation from all kinds of things. He used to be an indoor dog which I'm sure made it easier on his skin, but now he is an outdoor dog. No fleas involved at the moment, but lots of other pesky critters (fire ants, wasps, etc) that bite and lots of dirt, sand, mud to roll around in out here in the country. His previous owners gave him cephalexin and/or prednasone as needed and directed by a vet. Since we expect this to be an ongoing issue for him, we are hesitant to be frequently (if at all) giving him these meds especially after reading about them. We'd prefer to find a healthier, safer, more natural alternative and would appreciate any input.

The first thing I would suggest is to look at his diet. The minimum good diet for any dog should be meat, bone, omega 3 fatty acids, and probiotics. If you don't want to replace his dog food with meat and bone to start, try giving him a tablespoon of cod liver oil daily along with a capsule of a good human probiotic at each meal. If there is no improvement after 2 weeks, you will probably have to change to meat and bone.
