Low cost solution for small-scale mouse breeding

Crotus Oct 10, 2003 03:04 PM

This is my solution for my small-scale mouse breeding. You can get these at Target or wal-mart for around $9. I drilled a lot of little air holes along the top of the sides and back, and one bigger one in front for the water bottle. The bottles are at an angle so you can open each drawer without interfering with the others. Each drawer holds between 1.2 and 1.4 mice, a "hiding hole", and a wheel. I know..."A wheel?" It keeps them happy, healthy, and gives them something to do other than trying to escape. The drawer on the lower left is being used to store food at the moment. Clean up is remarkably quick and easy. There are no edges or chewable corners on the insides of the drawers.

that is a really good idea. i have seen them at stores before and have thought how easy it would be to convert them to a rodent breeding rack. its nice to see that someone actually did it. do you have them in your house? how are you handling the smell? the only thing that i have heard is that the rodents will start to chew at the plastic around the water spicket. the solution is to glue a metal washer at the hole so there is no edge to chew. good luck, chris

yes...the smell is always an issue. I keep it to a minimum by cleaning regularly, 2 or 3 times a week. I am considering putting a thin layer of cat litter under the aspen bedding. I notice that they always seem to urinate in the same 2 corners (I have 5 "tubs" and they all go in the same corners) most likely because I always feed and water them in the other corners. So I will probably try it out just in the "busy" corners first.
