>>Hi all just joined! I have a son of 2 months old and if i can wait that long i am hoping to get him an american bulldog. i found a breeder of hines line dogs and having read the thread explaining the different attributes of scott, johnson and hybrids i would like to know more about this particular line!
I dont know the Hines lines personally, but I can give you the breakdown. When you look at the UKC breed info sheet you will see massive size difference listed in standard for weight and height.
Personally I LOVE the hybrids, but perhaps thats because I have one. They come in a variety of sizes, builds and muzzle lengths that are a combination of the two dogs.
Scott is a smaller package dog. More compact with a longer muzzle. More stamina and energy on the whole.
Johnson often have a more typical bulldog head. Shorter snouts, you will see some elongate soft palate issue at times. They can be heat sensitive.
Allergies are fairly common in ABs as well.
One thing I would positively suggest. I am a big girl. 5'8" and around 200 lbs. My AB can knock me on my behind easily. I would suggest waiting until your child is walking on his own well before looking at the breed. One butt wiggle and I can be on the floor.
The breed as a whole is very loyal to the family. If you go the route of breeder, be sure to visit the breeders personally and meet the parents. This is very important as many less than quality breeders are popping up all over the place and we are seeing more people confuse these dogs with the American Pit Bull Terrier. As the breed is very pig headed, take the time to have a trainer on hand starting at puppy level and continuing classes for the first few years. ABs are a working breed and are happiest when they have a job to do. Also this breed does have natural protection instinct and many breeders will look for this quality when breeding. Please keep this in mind as your child grows and people come over. He may not initially be welcoming to people coming to the home, and this is acceptable behavior, but something training will work on.
