Anyone go to the Ozark hot show?

Chance May 27, 2003 08:46 PM

I thought it was a pretty nice show considering the size and number of vendors present. Tongs of rattlesnakes! Probably more so than anything else, nonvens included. My only complaints are that I would have liked to see more elapids, but the past two times I've gone elapids weren't very plentiful. And I would have rather not seen the man freehandling a couple of his young eyelashes in order to demonstrate feeding practices. At least the second time he explain to the audience in front of him that he had been bitten enough times (duh!) that he had developed his own immunities to them. So I guess security could be a bit tighter, but all in all I greatly enjoyed the show and look forward to it year after year. I even walked away with 1.1.1 atroxs, the female of which is probably gravid.

I thought that was pretty stupid myself! That type of behavior doesnt help our hobby. He shows a guy he can hold it,the guy goes home holds it, gets bit has A bad reaction and dies from a little Eyelash he thought was no big deal.I also saw him free handling A Mangrove there too. What a rocket scientest, his Eyelash were over priced anyway.

see you there next year though

I am sorry to hear that the person with the eyelash vipers was handling them. I'm sorry no one in charge saw this or had it pointed out to them. It will not happen again! Immunity indeed! Ain't no such thing...ask Bill Haast!!! Even he has reactions being bitten by some animals AND, being bitten is no "badge of honor!" Seeing this on kingsnake just has my blood boiling now! Sorry folks...

I actually talked to this perticular eyelash dealer for quite a while. He did free handle them while I was speaking to him, but he never said that he had an imunity to their venom, only that he had been bitten and it caused mild necrosis and blistering. He was actually one of the more knowledgeable, clean cut and professional vendors there. Inspite of the free handling, which I do not advocate, especially at a show. Although he isn't a "rocket scientist" as someone previosly mentioned, he is actually a nuclear biologist. No kidding.
