What happened to us almost a week ago.
Our husky/lab/shepard mix Koda was chewing on one of the bones that our husky Duke and him have had for so long. Being part shepard he has very powerful jaws and loves to chew, in fact he snaps pieces of hardened bone from the inside of cow knee joints.
As he was chewing it our husky (the dominant dog) leaped growling at him to make him give it up, only Duke slipped in the carpet and landed on Koda who now swallowed the large chunk of bone.
In the past this has never been a problem because they dont eat or intentionally swallow bones, in fact Duke rarely chewed bones.
We didnt know this happened for more than 24 hours. After a day Koda became sick, and a bit tired. By night time he was worn out, tired, hasnt eaten since the day before.
I took him to an emergency vet clinic at midnight, told the vet to start with an Xray and hold off on blood testing. The vet gave me a copy of the xrays on disc and said that it was at the tend of the small intestine, it has a 50% chance of passing.
We should have decided to go for surgery that night instead we waited until the next morning (Sunday), I rushed him back in worse shape.
I could not believe how horrible it was seeing how sick and in pain he was. We didnt sleep much that night, and the next morning (7 hours after surgery) I had to pick him up. We then came home with his IV still attached, and slept for a few hours. After gettting up I dropped him off at his normal vet for a few days of hospitalization.
The difference was night and day a few days later, my big puppy was dragging the woman who went to get him from the back of the clinic for me at full speed, leaped on me kissing and hugging like crazy.
I was so happy to see our active, happy, jumpy, loving puppy back acting like normal. This was a total of $2282.00 between 3 vet visits.
I hope that no one else has to see this first hand.
Keep in mind that both of our huskies are raw fed, but this was a smoked bone, not raw, so now all of the chewing bones are in the trash.
Heres Koda first day home, checking out Scooby.
