Salivary gland blocked...need advice

Fatima161 Nov 22, 2008 02:32 PM

My 8 year old yellow lab developed an egg sized lump under her chin. I took her to the vet and he said it was a blocked salivary gland. It was lanced and she was put on antibiotics and steroids. She had a speedy recovery. It is now three weeks later and the lump has returned. She is eating and drinking and does not seem to be in pain. I took her to the vet and wanted them to try medication (rather than going through with lancing again) to see if it would help get rid of the lump or at least shrink it. The vet prescribed tetracycline. Any advice or information would be appreciated.

The salivary gland keeps producing saliva, but if the duct is blocked, it can't get out, builds up, and shows up as a swelling. The problem is that the duct is swelled shut. It may be due to an infection, in which case tetracycline may help. If it doesn't, try homeopathic Mercurius solubilis or Thiosinaminum. If it is still blocked, it may be necessary to run a probe through the duct to dilate or unblock it.
