Vacines and older pets

Barbsbooklady Nov 23, 2008 09:22 PM

My 15 year old dog is now due for another shot. She has had a very bad last year with several reocurrances of vestibular syndrome. She is already past due for a rabies vacine and now needs DHPP. I was always diligent in getting her her vacines on time and rabies every two years up until the last one 3 years ago. I feel she is protected and does not need any others. Really at this age is it safe to vacinate her?

The only vaccinations an adult dog needs is a rabies shot, in order to keep him legal, usually every three years. So forget the DHLPP. All vaccinations are licensed only for use in healthy animals. If your dog is having health problems, he definitely should not receive a vaccination. Any good vaccination should give lifelong protection, so there is no risk of your dog developing rabies if exposed, only of having trouble with the animal control officer. A rabies titer will show that your dog is still protected against rabies, but the laws are written to require the shots, not proof of immunity.

Dr. Tobin,

Do you really believe this for the rabies vaccine, even if it is a killed vaccine? I had thought that this was only true for the MLV vaccines.

I had also figured that rabies *had to be* good for 7-10 years, but am glad to hear that you say lifelong. My girl has a permanent waiver for her rabies, and her last one was 9 years ago. I wouldn't be too concerned, except for the bats, raccoons and skunks near the house.
