Baby common garter

babysnapper Oct 10, 2003 03:58 PM

Well, I have to say I'm a reptile magnet lol.
IN two days yesterday I found a baby snapping turtle( I saved him from a cat), and today while walking home from school I discovered a juvy common garter snake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is adorable.

Questions it probably around over 20cm, but still very sleek.
Right now he's in a 10gallon with fall leaves, and soil, and a water dish with two guppies.

When I release him it will be at my uncles marsh, which is a conservation area, opposed to the habitat that the little one is from that will be I'm sure of cleared of soon.

What can I feed him? He has earthworms in his tank, and guppies. Will he eat crix, is he big enough to eat pinkies?

Should he have a large water dish?

Other details etc would be helpful

If it's very sleek, it might be a ribbon snake instead of a garter. Not a big difference, except that ribbon snakes generally will not eat earthworms. Either way, it probably won't eat crickets, and at that size (8 inches or so?) it probably is too small for pinkies. Tadpoles or very small frogs are another possibility for food, if you can find them. As for the water dish, it need only be large enough to allow the snake to immerse itself completely.

Hello,
Thanks for the info. I'd say he's around maybe a foot. But, still I hardly doubt he's a ribbon, as he looks identical to the common garter snake picture in my reptile book. My biologist uncle will identify it tommorow. So far that I know of he hasn't eaten anything. Will they only eat one meal per week? Several?

Is there any ways of having them eat? Will they maybe eat you put food item infront of them?
