St Bernard ailment

pierrejf Jan 29, 2009 11:31 AM

I'm new to this forum and would greatly appreciate anyone's assistance. We had a 6 yr old female St Bernard. Several days ago she lost her appetite, losing about 10 lbs, and became quite lethargic. We tried boiled rice, soft dog food but she would only drink water. My 7 yr old even offered her ice cream and she refused it. Yesterday she vomited blood and my 17 yr old daughter (with the help of another daughter and son) lifted her into the car and took her to the vet. The vet said nothing could be done and euthanized her. No diagnosis was offered. There's a chance she ate a few cups of cat food but other than that there was nothing she could have accidently ingested. Anyone have any thoughts as to what might have ailed her? She was the first St Bernard we owned and was without a doubt the best dog we ever had (among Labs, OESD's, Great Dane) and will be sorely missed by the family. She received plently of exercise, five acres surrounded by a wireless fence, and was subject to tons of affection from my 6 kids. We live 20 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA and she absolutely lived the snow. Many thanks in advance.

I'm really sorry for the loss of your dog. Just to offer an opinion I'm not sure your vet handled this in the right way. If you still have access to the body you might want to order a necropsy to see what happened to the dog in the event you may want to obtain another St. Bernard. I'm just really puzzled why your vet acted so hastily with no diagnosis givem. I doubt the cat food had anything to with it. It could possibly have been a tumor of some sort. Again I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so sad to lose a good dog friend.

As for what exactly happened- everything at this point is speculation and only a necropsy can tell you for sure what happened. I doubt it was anything you could have prevented sadly.

Hopefully your family will heal in time and a new pup can come into your lives.
