puppy vaccines

briarhilljan Feb 16, 2009 11:51 AM

We recently rescued a 6.5 week old Great Dane Puppy. He is now almost 10 weeks old. I am trying to determine the best course of action for his shots. I am not a lover of vaccinating, and we have not vaccinated our other two dogs past the shots they recieved as puppies. There a some shots that I wish we had not given them now.

Dougal was born 11 Dec. on 22 Jan, he was given a combination vaccine by Merial (we did not give it to him) It included Distemper, Adenovirus 2, Parainfluenza, and Parvo virus. He has not recieved any vaccinations since he came to live with us. He is very happy and healthy guy, and we want to keep it that way.

I have read that parvo and distemper are the most important and should be given at 12-14 weeks and only once.

Any information you could give me would be most appreciated! Thank you

Your information is correct; one shot of the distemper parvo combination at 12-14 weeks would protect him for life. The only other vaccine he should receive is rabies, to meet the legal requirements. Maternal antibodies, which are lost over a period of several months after birth, can interfere with the development of immunity from vaccinations.
A vaccination at six weeks is pretty early, so there is no assurance that he is protected. There are several courses you can take: vaccinate him again at 12-14 weeks, give him a course of homeopathic nosodes, or run a titer for distemper and parvo at 16 weeks. If he has any reasonable amount of antibodies at that time, then he is producing antibodies and will have lifelong protection.
