Curious about ears

Jonnyblaze Feb 24, 2009 01:09 AM

I don't have a doberman but hope to get one some day..I was wondering, what does it take to crop their ears??I have no idea how it works so I'm curious..Can it be bad for them or good for them to do this??

In three words... a good professional! Ear cropping cannot be taken lightly nor can it be left to any ordinary veterinarian to perform. It's an art and can make all of the difference in how a cropped ear looks and behaves. Personally I like the dogs that are traditionally cropped that have the ears left natural. Most breeders of purebreds will lean toward cropping. If there is a good side it is that it might prevent inner ear problems. The bad side would be... why put a dog through this?

There's a bit of conflicting information on the benefits of cropping vs. keeping the ear uncropped.

Personally, if I were to be contemplating a breed that normally had ears cropped, I'd work with the breeder and utilize their expertise. It's not something that should be done by amateurs. Vets that are unskilled with it can do a pretty nasty job of it.
