Good Gecko species question(Any Expirenced Gecko-herpers WANTED!!!!!!!!!!)

LizardLuva Oct 10, 2003 04:40 PM

Not A LEOPARD GECKO!I want a relatively inexpensive gecko, (under 20.00), could be housed in a 10-20 gallon Aquarium, relatively hardy, (for some handleing)and relatively docile(not too jumpy or too agressive, but i would be hannd tamed...)I was looking ionto Pictus Geckos, and Tokays, but i would have to get a baby and tame it from birth. Thanks!

I would try viper geckos, sand dune geckos (stenodactylus), and banded geckos (Celeonyx).

ps- pictus would be your best option..

How much do each species run? i like sand dunes too!

Dune geckos are about 20$ depending on the source. They are also pretty tiny and non-handleable in most cases. Tokays will outgrow a 20 gallon so I would scratch that. Look into ground dwelling sand geckos, thats your best bet.

Vipers might be your best bet from what ive heard but I never had any YET!! Tokays wont be tame in that small of a tank and very few will tame and with alot of work. I have a couple Steno's and their really neat and inexpensive but like noted their skin is fragle and they shoudn't be handled much. I know not much help. I've had banded Geckos to but they dont like being handled either. Look at a AFT. Very docile, easy to care for and very handleable. May be a little more than $20.00 but I've seen some for not much more than that in the KS classifieds.
Good luck with your decision.

Hey what about a creasted gecko, i know there not under 20 but they loved to be handled and eat baby food out of your hand. I know they can reach high prices but there sturdy and you do get what you pay for.

My S. Petrii dont mind being handled at all (but i rarely do) if its gentle. They used to run away, but now are pretty tame.

I would go for an AFT. I keep one and absolutely love it. Its the best kind for me. Mine has never tried to bite, absolutely docile, calm, and so easy to handle. Their care is simple, they are nocturnal so dont require expensive uvb, can be kept in even a ten gallon tank for their whole lives, if they are housed singly. ( I keep mine in a 20 long.) They require medium levels of humidity.
