Ridge in mixes

Audrey76 Mar 05, 2009 11:31 AM

Hi all, I'm about to adopt from a resuce an 11 month old male that is called a ridgeback/coonhound mix. He does, however, have the classic ridge down his back. Can a mix have the distinctive ridge or is that just a trait of a purebred? I'm adopting him no matter what, as he's gorgeous. I was just curious. Thanks.

It's very possible for him to adopt that trademark ridge. It could also be possible for a mix to not have it. In purebreds it would always be present. You'll have to post a picture or two when you can. We'd love to see him.

Actually a purebred can be ridgeless but most breeders 'cull' them at birth. Genetically possible though.
