New Pups on the Block

touvellep Mar 15, 2009 08:54 PM

HI!
Being the newbie on the block I would love to know anything, and everything, about
you and your shibas. I've already read a lot before I joined the forum, but not as much as I 'd like. About us.... Beni came into our lives 4 years ago as a rescue. He was micro-chipped, potty trained, and had the basic commands down. For some reason his (non) human did not want him, and he was found roaming around in a field - cold, skinny, dirty, and scared. A shiba breeder (The fabulous Debbie) saw him and rescued him. She let us know about this larger than average shiba....and let me tell you - it was belonging at first sight - we belonged to him and he to us. Finding a name was tricky, but with his thick red coat, and being Japanese, I asked my friends and mom (who is Japanese) about different names that would do this fabulous dog justice...and... Beni became Beni...

The abridged end of part one...

I look forward to knowing more about you...
Patty

Patty thanks for telling the story about your Beni. I can't thank you enough for rescuing him.

My story goes like this... I was looking for a companion dog for my Springer mix named Shemp. I started researching different breeds and came across the Shiba Inu with the help of a friend. Since I was looking for a dog different than I had before this breed was perfect. I was first going to obtain a puppy from a breeder here NY but then came across a link to Shiba rescue.

I found a breeder/rescue person here in NY and sent her an email. She replied back that at first she didn't have any rescues but they always came in and she would keep me in mind. A couple of weeks later she wrote and told me about a Shiba that was named Haiku. He was a stray found in Brooklyn and had some hip problems so he wasn't perfect but she worried he wouldn't find a home. She sent me a picture and it was all over from there! I drove to her place and adopted Haiku and once I returned home I changed his name to Keiko. He and Shemp became friends but it didn't last long as few a weeks later Shemp died from a tumor that had ruptured his spleen.

I wrote my rescue contact about a week later and told her what happened. I said I would rescue another Shiba, a female this time if one came her way. She said it was mostly males that came into rescue but if one did she would let me know. Some months later she wrote and told me about a Shiba named Penny. She lived in Dutchess County was most likely living in an abusive situation being unspayed living in the same house as an unspayed female. The people didn't understand the Shiba Inu and put her into rescue. Valerie(my contact)said she had some agression issues but she would work with her with her own dogs and try to bring her around. Some weeks later she emailed and said she woulf be ready to go. Once again I drove to Val's this time with Keiko for that meeting. Penny was a little agressive but settled down a little and under Val's watchful she thought it would work out... so I took her home with me. Once home I again changed her name from Penny to Toshi.

Tragedy then struck the following year as Val was misdiagnosed with bone cancer. I hadn't heard from her for a while and contacted another breeder friend of mine. After a few calls to some other people she called with the news that Val was dying. Val's daughter in law found a couple of emails of mine and wrote asking if I would be interested in adopting one of Val's own dogs since now they too had to go to rescue. I told her I would if she had male left for adoption. She put me in touch with a Sharon Roble in PA who was handling the rescue of Val's dogs. She told me about Beni who was 5 years old at the time and she was worried with him being older that he might not be adopted. As it turned out Beni was one of Val's favorites... her stud dog who had quite an impressive career on the show circuit. His full name is CH High Ridges Beni Tatsumaki.

I was told that when Val found out I was taking Beni that she smiled knowing Beni would be safe. So one day before the first anniversary of my adopting Keiko... I made the drive to meet two of Val's friends and pick up Beni. Sadly two weeks later Valerie passed away. About 2˝ years ago Beni was diagnosed as having primary glaucoma and I have been doing everything I can to keep him sighted for as long as I can.

Well that pretty much brings you up to date on my guys. Hopefully the others will come forth to tell their stories.

Murphy's story.....We only knew we wanted a small dog. We had mostly had large dogs, but thought since we are retired, and might at some point move to a smaller place, a smaller dog would be a good idea. We knew nothing about shibas. Had never even heard of them. After checking several shelters, we came upon an almost 5 month old, black and white puppy that just seemed to be exactly what we had in mind. We were told he was shiba inu/american eskimo. He was sweet, that was all we knew.

The next day, we took him to our vet for a checkup and last shot. Our doc walked into the room, took one look and said "Uh oh, a shiba.......you're going to have your hands full with this one!" A year later, that same doc, after completing Murphy's checkup and giving him a booster shot.......all accepted with no complaints whatsoever, said "Murphy, you are not just a good dog, you are a wonderful dog!"

He may be easier to manage than a purebred, but he sure can be ALL shiba sometimes! He does have good manners, though, and we feel we are really lucky to belong to him!

I've been on these forums for a very long time so I'm not used to introducing myself anymore. I'm one of the "oldies." Kita and Taiko are my two and they are 9 and 6 respectively. Kita taught me all about shiba- what's good about them and what's bad about them and I love her dearly for the lessons. She's had some major medical issues to battle, but she's the absolute best family dog anyone could ask for. Taiko came along and was "easy" in comparisson to Kita. Trust me- he's pure shiba though. I have always had a love of training and I rode horses for many years. When I finally could get a dog, I chose the shiba as a compromise between a chihuahua (that my husband wanted) and the german shepherd that I wanted. In order for me to stay sane living with wild shibas in the house, I attempt to teach them shibas to use their minds for "good and not evil." Both Kita and Taiko are trained to competition levels of obedience and agility yet Taiko is my only dog that enjoys showing at competition levels. Kita shows off her skills in front of 80 year old dementia patients as a registered therapy dog. Taiko enjoys his fan club to be a bit louder. The past 9 years have been a wild ride and I'm 100% sure my dogs have more to teach me.

Hi, Patty--

It's good to learn more about Beni! My shiba, Artemis, will be six next month, and I've had her since she was a tiny pup. Here she is, now and then:

Patty and welcome

I am Jodi and I belong to my shiba, Nickoli. Nic will be 6 this year and I've had him for almost 4 years now. He came to me through a shiba rescue. Although Nickoli had a rough start and we had to work on some issues, he's completely happy now that he's accepted laundry baskets and remote controls are not evil. He is a spoiled brat and he knows it. He was very dog aggressive when i got him, but now he lives with 3 other dogs and cat. I also volunteer with a local rescue, so i'm always bringing foster dogs for the weekend or just for a visit. It has worked out well as all my dogs are becoming social butterflys
My fur family includes Nickoli the shiba, Molly the lab, Dakota the husky, and Jigs the american eskimo mix.

i can't wait to hear more about Beni!
