Sonny and his limp!

Ragsysmum Mar 18, 2009 06:13 AM

Sonny has finished his course of 4 cartrophen injections for the front leg limp which the vet thought was arthritis.....but it hasn't really helped at all. Though he can race around the garden like mad and amble along reasonable well also, it is mainly when he 'trots' that the limp is really bad and especially on hard surfaces. He never cries or yelps, the joints seem to move pretty freely all the way along and it does not alter with warmer days or ease off once he has walked a while as I would tend to expect with arthritis. There is nothing obviously wrong with his foot or pads either, no signs of cuts or corns that we or the vet can see and he doesn't yelp or pull away when you press his pads. So tomorrow my sweet boy is going for some Xrays to see if anything shows up. He is not going to like that at all as it will mean missing his breakfast which for Sonny is definitely a major disaster!!

Please think of him and wish him well if you can spare a moment tomorrow.

Sonny will be in my thoughts today, Sue. I hope he gets a good report from the x-rays. (And a meal as soon as possible afterward since a couple of ours consider missing breakfast a disaster too)

Sue,
You can bet that we will be keeping Sonny in our thoughts and prayers for negative x-rays. My jazzy has a perpetual limp that was initially caused by a broken hock, but is now exacerbated by arthritis in his low back. He actually does better running ~ but then he pays for it later.

Have you considered acupunture? It worked wonder on 2 of mine when arthritis pain was a problem.

Hope things get better!

Poor Sonny! Having to miss breakfast! What an outrage! Hope all goes well, Sue! I will be thinking about you both!

Full marks to those who were sure it would turn out to be a corn which they did finally find. At least having had the Xrays done we know all his bones and joints are in good shape too so I guess it was worth the expense, though the weeks of cartrophen injections were obviously not necessary but will have done no harm, except to my wallet! The vet was adamant that they wanted to remove just the corn at this stage and hope it would not return but we all know that it most likely will, so we will be anticipating removal of the affected toe at some stage in the future. However, meanwhile, 'no return of the corn' thoughts would be much appreciated by my beautiful boy Sonny who was so pleased to get home and be fed again.

Sue, so good to hear all was well with the xrays. Sorry Sonny will have to have the corn removed but I am sure he will do well. Al came to us missing a middle toe and then had to have the other toe next to it removed and he did fine with it.
I forgot how you can post photos with this board. This pic of Al is when we first got him about 6 years ago, he still has his temporary collar on. You cannot see Al's foot with the missing toes, the photo cut off the front feet. I will have to figure out how to post more photos here.

What a handsome lad he is.....even with his front feet missing!! If the corn comes back as we expect it will, I will opt for removal of the toe though the vet seems very reluctant! I guess it's more money for them in the long term, if we just keep going back for corn removal and most folk don't argue with their vet.

Sue,
I am so glad that Sonny's diagnosis was cancer free. Corns are not comfortable, but greyt news when you are expceting the worst. About that corn coming back.. I have read, but never successfully tried, that cutting duct tape into a teeny circle and placing it over the corn is a treatment that is supposed to make the corn *die* and go away for good. Now... with Jazzy, it might have worked had Jazz not constantly taken the tape off. And when I muzzled him, I swear that he bribed Luke to do it for him.
