Kaia and I are going on a road trip

kona63 Mar 25, 2009 01:48 PM

I am taking Kaia to our previous vet back in Mass. We are heading out Friday afternoon. Our appt is on Saturday monring. I am taking Kaia for a second opinion on the whole liver shunt issue. I have faxed over all the records to our former vet. I really wish she had an office around here. Some of what I got from her. When they did the blood work for Kaia, Kaia should have been fasted. He was not. So in order to get a more accurate result they want me to fast him before we go in, then feed him and have more blood drawn. From the numbers she saw on the origianl blood work, she does not feel it is as bad as our current vet told us. The test they are looking at is BILE ACIDS. On his last test without fasting the result was 41.4 H whatever that means. If it were a "Liver Shunt" we should be seeing levels over 100. So Kaia and I will have a good bonding trip. It is so great that our former vet has taken the time to look into this for us. So as I learn more I will pass it along.

Thanks for this update. I've had Kaia on my mind, often, and wondered how he is doing. One thought occurred to me...could this be in any way related to his bad reaction to Bio Spot last year?

Anne, the vet we are going to see this weekend does not believe so. She said the reaction is generaly topical and should not casue what we are seeing.

This is AWESOME news!!!!! I'm so happy you are getting a second opinion and from a vet that seems to really know the problem. All paws crossed that this trip proves to be worthwile and Kaia gets the correct help he needs.

When in doubt second opinions never hurt. Hopefully your old vet will help to get to the root cause of Kaia's problems. Good luck on the drive... looks like it'll be perfect traveling weather. Let us know how he makes out.
