Beni had another good visit to Cornell today. The doctors continue to be very pleased with what they see and tell me to keep up the good work. Beni's pressure reading was 5 which is where it's been for a long long time. The tube to the valve remains clear and the valve itself continues to function normally. He also did very well again with the Schirmer tear test. The student told me that right before Beni's appointment she had one with a Sibe where the valve hadn't taken from the previous week. That is the way these things can go with dogs.
I did have some anxious moments two weeks ago when I had the dogs out for a walk. Beni gets walked on seperate leash while Keiko and Toshi are on another double leash. I'm always watchful of Beni to make sure he stays out of harms way but in a split second there was potential disaster. Everytime the dogs poop or pee they always have to moonwalk kicking up dirt with their hind legs and this time in spite of me watching... Beni received a facefull of dirt right into his good eye. He immediately atarted pawing and scratching and I cleaned his face and eye the best I could with a tissue I had. In the meantime I'm tugging on all three to get Beni home as quickly as possible which wasn't easy with Beni pawing at his eye. I ended up carrying him most of the way. Once home I got out the med kit and flushed and flushed his eye with eye wash and looked the best I could to check for more dirt. I kept flushing and he kept pawing and now he was squinting. Just as a precaution I called Cornell to make sure any dirt couldn't plug the tube or his pawing couldn't dislodge either the tube or the valve. Dr. Montgomery told me I did absolutely the right thing in flushing out the eye. He also asked if I had any antibiotic ointment which I did and he told me to use that for a couple of days and to just keep a close eye for any infection with the eye. By that night he quit pawing but he was still squinting. The next day I flushed the eye again and by days end he had pretty much returned to normal. I did continue to use the ointment for another couple of days as a precaution.
At least the visit today didn't show any corneal abrasions. Why do these dogs do these things to us?? lol
