Beni update...

Shboom Apr 02, 2009 05:55 PM

Beni had another good visit to Cornell today. The doctors continue to be very pleased with what they see and tell me to keep up the good work. Beni's pressure reading was 5 which is where it's been for a long long time. The tube to the valve remains clear and the valve itself continues to function normally. He also did very well again with the Schirmer tear test. The student told me that right before Beni's appointment she had one with a Sibe where the valve hadn't taken from the previous week. That is the way these things can go with dogs.

I did have some anxious moments two weeks ago when I had the dogs out for a walk. Beni gets walked on seperate leash while Keiko and Toshi are on another double leash. I'm always watchful of Beni to make sure he stays out of harms way but in a split second there was potential disaster. Everytime the dogs poop or pee they always have to moonwalk kicking up dirt with their hind legs and this time in spite of me watching... Beni received a facefull of dirt right into his good eye. He immediately atarted pawing and scratching and I cleaned his face and eye the best I could with a tissue I had. In the meantime I'm tugging on all three to get Beni home as quickly as possible which wasn't easy with Beni pawing at his eye. I ended up carrying him most of the way. Once home I got out the med kit and flushed and flushed his eye with eye wash and looked the best I could to check for more dirt. I kept flushing and he kept pawing and now he was squinting. Just as a precaution I called Cornell to make sure any dirt couldn't plug the tube or his pawing couldn't dislodge either the tube or the valve. Dr. Montgomery told me I did absolutely the right thing in flushing out the eye. He also asked if I had any antibiotic ointment which I did and he told me to use that for a couple of days and to just keep a close eye for any infection with the eye. By that night he quit pawing but he was still squinting. The next day I flushed the eye again and by days end he had pretty much returned to normal. I did continue to use the ointment for another couple of days as a precaution.

At least the visit today didn't show any corneal abrasions. Why do these dogs do these things to us?? lol

Oh Bob, how scary! That would be hard enough to deal with if you had only one dog to scurry home, but with three, it must have been quite a trip! I'm so glad no harm was done and happy to hear how well Beni is doing! He's got a really great dad!

Hello!

What a scary, crazy, surreal walk that must have been! I could just feel the anxiety
you must have been going through...I just have the feeling that your Beni is like my Beni....they are somehow able to become part of some kind of wild predicament, but
able to get through it in one piece ( even though we are somewhat frazzled)....Our pups surely keep life interesting and exciting, don't they!

Next week is vacation time, so I look forward to getting caught up on everyones messages.

Take care...

Patty

Glad things are well in spite of the mishap prior to the vet visit. We go in Monday for Taiko recheck and to have yet another lump looked at on Kita (this one has me concerned). Kita also gets her acupuncture treatment that she loves so hopefully all will be good.

My thoughts and prayers are with you when you take Taiko and Kita in for their checkups tomorrow. I'm looking forward to hearing that everything turned out well...
A lot of positive energy is flowing our way!!!!

Thanks Patty- both dogs are doing well. Kita's issue was minor and Taiko- well- he'll be happier in a week or so. Kita's got a spring to her step this morning that only acupuncture can do to her. It always amazes me how much she enjoys it and how well it works for her.

Boy Bob you are so attentive to Beni. I thinks it just wonderful all that you do for him and the rest of you pack. It's always so great to hear that he is still doing wonderful.

Good to hear Beni had another good visit! You take such good care of him, and I'm glad his other eye is okay after the dirt flinging fiasco. . .

Glad to hear you and Beni had another good visit! Happy he didn't have problems with his other eye from the dirt. I sometimes wonder why dogs do the things they do...sure jerks our chain.

Asher lost almost two lbs. last month. Not sure who was most upset...me or the vet. After that she changed his treatment a little and told us to bring him back in 10 days. On that visit he had gained back what he lost.

Beni and Asher might not be miracle dogs...we might need to change that to Million Dollar Babies.

Winona... Million Dollar Babies... you hit that nail right on the head. Sounds like Asher is having his own ups and downs but glad to see he bounced back from the weight loss. Now if he gain some weight and stay to the positive.. that would be a good thing!
