New beardie owner....some questions...

philg Oct 10, 2003 05:42 PM

Just bought an adult male with a 50 gallon aquarium. I have alot of geckos, but I've never owned a beardie....hes pretty awesome....I have some questions though:

The previous owner had an UTH as well as a basking lamp. Is the UTH necessary??

And....

Do they need a hide inside the enclosure??

Thanks-

Most of us highly discourage the use of UTHs; beardies can't sense heat from below & can get easily burned. As for the hide spot inside the enclosure, I have none in mine but have been planning on adding them.

Hi
on my website i have many links about beardie care !
i would not use a under tank heater.
also not recomended is a hotrock .
only if you cage temps drops below the 55 at night, then i would use some kind of heat like a ceramic heater.
i always make a baskingspot and hide same time.
i use bricks who you can buy in diferent colors in a garden suply center.
i take 4 bricks then i place 2 bricks on top of each other then i place the other 2 on top of each other 1 feet away.
then on top of the bricks i put a nice sandy surface flagstone and one flagstone i use to make a ramp.
they like to lay not horizontal but abit diogonal ,dunno if i spelled it right am dutch.
the surface of the rocks also trim there nails same time they clim on it.
if you placed the higest point of the ramp under the baskingspot then you have a nice hiding and baskingspot same time.
i also put some greens on the platau i made for them they go faster for the greens then if its nearby.
so i would say go for red colord sandy flagstones.
put bricks direct on the bottom r else they can digged under neat it !!
