Nail question

Cheryl G Apr 10, 2009 09:36 AM

Silly has been having a problem with her nails which my vet, as well as my groomer, are really not sure what it is. The quick in her nails is receeding, and her nails are becoming hollow on the inside, as well as splitting. Has anyone ever come across this in their greys, and know what it is? There is never any bleeding.

Yes, Wyatt has this. It can be very painful and a bloody mess until it gets under control. Research SLO for canines.
Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy, a canine autoimmune nail disease. There is even a Yahoo support group for it.

Go to Dr. Stack's site, Greythealth and look at the pictures. It is under toenails falling off on the left side. Do not let them do a biopsy, just start treating it.

Wyatt had all of his nails removed while under and is so much better now. We are on a human med for treatment now, every 3rd day and it is under control. His nails are just now starting to grow back, crumbly, but healthier, after a year. I could not give him the vit E and fish oil because of his sensitive tummy. We did the 3 month pred route with nicinamide (NOT niacin!)and some other drugs for pain.

Good luck, hang in there...get it under control for your sake and the hounds!

This sight above is the gal (Andrea Bloodaxe) that started the SLO Yahoo group. She recently passed away unexpectedly at a very early age, but her boyfriend is running the sight in her memory.

Another good sight with pictures.
