Ayla had a seizure

deetu Apr 13, 2009 01:20 AM

I carried her up to bed, like I always do. She shook and woke up her daddy, like she always does. I put a blanket over her and my side of the bed, like always. And then she started screaming...

Crying actually, laying on her side, paddling and eyes glazed. It was the longest 10 seconds. She lost her urine. She then came out of it and seems fine.

I called the emergency vet and asked questions. She said it may happen again, it may not happen again for a year. If it happens again and lasts longer then a minute to bring her in.
She said if she got into chocolate she would be disoriented and drooling.

I'm calling my regular vet tomorrow. Please say a prayer for her.

Poor Ayla! We know what you went thru. Tootles and Becker were both out in the yard for their morning do do's a couple of years ago. All of a sudden Tootles flew up on the porch and hit the storm door and flew back off the porch. We didn't think too much of it but she immediately did it again. That's when we rushed out and there was Becker laying on the ground kicking and drooling and with glazed eyes. It was horrible to see him in that condition. We immediately got him into our vet and she put him on phnobarbital. He had one minor episode as his body was adjusting but nothing since. Our Tutu was on it for the six years we were fortunate enough to have her and it was great. It is a condition that can be controlled. Give Ayla a pat for us.

Dee, about a year ago my Border Terrier got stiff as a board and fell over. It only lasted about ten seconds. I also panic and call the vet. Since that was the only one that happened he said just keep an eye on her and call immediately if she has another. Since that time she has never had it happen.

Prayers being send to Ayla!

Cheryl

Oh dear, Cheryl I'm sorry to hear that. I would have reacted the same way had it happened to Katie. I wonder what causes these seizures.

Thank you everyone for your answers and prayers. My vet want to take a wait approach but I asked for blood tests so we will get results tomorrow.

She seems perfectly fine today.

Vet called and said that her blood panel came out great across the board.

She knows how crazy I am about Ayla and said it was good to have done the blood test because at least it would give us peace of mind. She said that one in ten dogs has a seizure at least once in it's life and that we shouldn't worry unless it happens again, longer or more frequent.

She said (I can't remember exactly what she said but the meaning) that sometimes the electric impulses in the brain gets to be too much and a seizure is how a dog gets rid of it.

She whimpered in her sleep last night and both my husband and I jumped up to check her. He is really worried about her. We also decided not to tell my inlaws; they have enough to worry about and it may never happen again. Only thing is, I wanted to go on a cruise and they usually take care of her for us so we may have to tell them or have someone else watch her.

Oh, that's wonderful news, Dee! That's also good information for me to have should Katie ever have one.
