Tip for keeping collards fresh

ekpunobi Oct 10, 2003 06:04 PM

I'm sure many of you have already tried this, but I just discovered it, so I had to share. My collards were looking kind of pathetic, all wilted and everything. Well, I looked aroung and found an old vase, but them in it with water and, voila!!! They came right back to life and have been crisp for 4 days now. I would have thrown them out before.

I'm so happy when I can save a buck!!

I talked my supermarket into selling me a few leafs from a lot of different greens. This way I don't have to buy whole bunches that go bad before I could finish them, especially since I have a baby that doesn't eat alot.

I take mine out of the produce plastic, wash it while leaving it wet, then put them in the plastic shopping bag with a wet paper towel. That seems to work best for me.

I've never thought of asking my produce people to do that! I'll have to try that. I have 2 guinea pigs, a rabbit, and 4 sugar gliders that all eat collards, and I feed tham to my mealworms, supers, and crickets, so I go through quite a bit at my house. I'm going to have to plant some in the nest couple of weeks. That's the cheapest way to do it. Then you can go break off a leaf whenever you need one.
