Please if anyone is feeding NUTRO read this article.
I am really angry I no longer feed NUTRO but recomended their products for years, and raised several litters on their puppy food. Very upsetting.

Denice, this same topic came up a year or so ago I believe with many brands involved. I also feed Katie Nutro Ultra Senior now at age fourteen. It makes you wonder what to do and what to feed them.

This is fairly serious...so just watch and if you see any symptoms take her off the food and to the vet is really all you can do. I fed Nutro for years and recomended Nutros All Natural to all my puppy buyers for 8 years, so I worry.

Also as an after thought, if you recall I took my dogs off Nutros when they changed from the "coat formula" to the digestive formula, and I noticed the ingredients changed. You can cut out the label and periodically compare to see if they make changes to the formula.

Thanks for the suggestions, Denice. I just got the bag out to look at it and it will take me a week to read all that's on the front of the bag sides of the bag and the back of the bag. This is the Ultra Senior. What are you feeding now?

Currently I am feeding Bil Jac puppy to the young dogs and Purina One Natural Blends for the adults. I add organic/holistic canned chicken to the kibble.
When I left Nutros All Natural initially I fed California Natural because it most closely resembled the ingredients in the old formula of Nutros. But when I came to Arkansas it just wasn't available and the shipping was too expensive.
I don't really like the regular Purina One but when they came out with the Natural Blends I really liked the contents.
We do not have the selection here that we had in Florida for sure.

Doesn't Bill Jac have corn and by products etc?

Well yes as do most commercial dog foods..these are the ingredients for Bil Jac Puppy:

Chicken, Chicken By Products (Organs Only, Including Chicken Liver), Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Brewers Dried Yeast, Cane Molasses, Egg Product, Salt, Sodium Propionate, (a preservative), DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Niacin, Biotin, Choline Chloride, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Inositol, BHA (a preservative), Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite

Several show breeders use this food so I decided since it was available to try it. I found that the small extruded bits are easy for the puppies to chew at a young age without having to soak the kibble. They are not as hard as some of the baked kibbles. The stools are small and firm. A sign they are using all the available nutrients. The molasses helps keep the blood sugar stable in puppies and they all seem to really like it.

The Purina One Natural Blends ingredients are:

Chicken (natural source of glucosamine), corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), brown rice, oat meal, whole grain corn, whole grain wheat, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), dried beet pulp, calcium phosphate, natural flavor, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, salt, soybean oil, canola oil, malted barley flour, dried sweet potatoes, dried spinach, choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite. B-4301

I liked that this food had sweet potatoes and spinich in it, and it smells really fresh and good when you open a new bag.

I am certain there are other and better choices, but short of having food shipped in my choices are narrow here and the dogs seem to be doing really well on these foods. The coats I have been getting on all my dogs are the best they have been in years and everyone is their correct weight. Again with this food the stools are firm and small and all the dogs seem to really like it.

Here at Kroger they offer holistic organic canned dog food that is 100% chicken. All the grown dogs get a table spoon of that mixed with kibble with each meal.

So far so good....never in a million years did I think I would ever feed a Purina product but it is made just 200 miles from here and always fresh. It is much different living in a small town than it was near a large city.

Denice, I think the proof that this food is good for your dogs is your own experience and results of what you are seeing in them! I have a Kroger here and I just might look for that 100% chicken! That sounds good

I knew about the buyout and warned people that the food was going to change.

My sister used to feed her dogs the Lamb and Rice for allergies (also because I got her a bunch of coupons) They did really well on the food. She moved and continued feeding Nutro at her new home. After the buyout, she noticed her dogs going back to allergic reactions. When she went back to her old house to bring the rest of her stuff, there was 1/2 a 40 pound bag left. She fed it to her dogs and they stopped itching and looked better. Finished that bag and it was back to itching on the new Nutro.

My new cat will only eat Nutro so I have no choice but she is doing well on it.

I did find that she didn't like the new cat Greenies I bought though and when I called the company (surprise! Nutro) and asked if the formula was changed I noticed that orginal bag I gave her were expired so they did change the formula. She sent me some old samples that the cat is wild over but will just eat the newer ones.

Dee, Katie loves her Greenie Bones also. I buy the bag of eight large senior and throw them away when the pieces get too small.

It depends what is available in your area and of course the dogs have to like it.
For Sissy look for something that has small bites or Toy formula available. Many of the holistic foods have Toy formulas and you have to find something that is easy for you to get.
Phyl I don't know what to say...perhaps you could call them and make sure they are not going to change the formula.
I do know that in addition to the one I feed Purina came out with Pro Plan Selects and the Chicken and Brown Rice does not have ground corn in it. I can't get it here but I know several people using it, they also have other meat varieties of it.

I am looking for something without corn! I don't think that is good for them? Just really don't know. I DO know that I want the first 3 ingredients to be meat. I will check to see if that variety is available here. I'm gonna check out the Purina One Naturals too
Thanks

Corn is a problem for many dogs. Trudy can't eat grain, beef or chicken. Nat. Balance Venison and Sweet potato has been great for her. I also make lots of fresh food.

Each dog is different. Her coat got even better with Nat. Balance.

Denice, this is disturbing! I remember Dee telling us what she had heard about the chamnge in formula, too.
I read all the way through the article you sent and didn't see anything there about Ultra Holistic, which is what I feed, but just to be on the safe side, I think I will change. I am right at the pint of buying a new bag and this would be a good time to gradually introduce the new food. Now, which food to try?????

-----

Trudysmom Apr 24, 2009 06:47 PM

You can try Natural Balance. Trudy eats what I cook and also Nat. Balance venison canned.
