doggie door advice

shyshiba May 02, 2009 10:36 AM

We're finally doing it! Operation doggie door install has begun
For those of you who have a doggie door, is there any brand that is better than another, and also since the size of our dogs varies from a 16 lb shiba to an 85 lb husky, we're not exactly sure what size of a doggie door to get. We definately want it big enough for the big dogs to get through, but not too heavy or difficult for the little dogs to get through. And we have no idea how hard or easy it is to actually install the doggie door into the actual door. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated

Jodi, I hope you will get answers soon. We do have a doggie door, but ours is a panel that sits in a sliding glass door..........double doors, so one outside can be locked, and one on inside has the doggie door (inside door has a broomstick so it can be opened only wide enough for the panel). We've had it for many years and at one time a tall, 90 pound dog could use it....had to crouch a bit, though. Puppies, smaller than Murphy is now, had no trouble pushing it open, and Murphy flies through it soooooooo fast!

Sorry, I just can't answer questions about installation in a regular door.

Jodi I don't know much about them but just did a Google search on Doggie Doors and there are many different varieties and styles. Even Home Depot had about 96 different ones to offer. If the installation proves to difficult I'm sure any handyman could install it for you. Let us know how you make out.

Hi Jodi,
I'm sorry, I have no advice to give you, but I hope your doggie door is successful.
After years of having the pups in while I was at work (Reasons -BAD NEIGHBOR, coyotes, and snakes...in that order), a doggie door was installed after the BAD NEIGHBOR moved. It was installed in the wall, has a flap that swings back and forth, and a metal door that slides into place when we don't want them out (sleep time). Kari had no problem with the door, but Beni pretended he couldn't fit. Miraculously, put a treat on the other side and he was flying out like a rocket!

I love our doggie door, and I hope you love yours, too!

No problems with coyotes??

No problem with coyotes...yet....but... I always have my eyes open. My neighbors, on both sides, are wonderful - and at home during the day....they'll let me know if there is a problem (we have a zero lot line - the only thing that separates us is a fence or side), and both have dogs that will alert them of any problems. Also, Animal Control informed me that dogs are in danger if they are tiny, old, or frail. She also said if there was an abundance of rabbits, squirrels, and other small game my dogs should be o.k. Believe me, I was SO nervous the 1st month....but, I'm good now...I feel so much more relaxed knowing that they are not locked in the house for 8 hours or more, and they can go out if necessary.

The one thing I do worry about is the dog off leash...
Every problem that we have encountered is from the "friendly dog" that (amazingly) doesn't listen to their human, and likes to charge us... not good with my 2 leashed Shibas. So... everyday is an adventure - a time to bond, enjoy the world around us, and appreciate what we have...

Hope to hear from all of you soon!

Patty
