Strange sighting...

Skaket May 14, 2009 11:37 AM

I was getting ready to take Katie out for her morning walk so I looked out my kitchen window to the backyard to see if it was raining and saw this huge bird. My first thought was a Canada Goose but it didn't really look like one. Anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? It kind of looks like a turkey to me. LOL

Yumm... Thanksgiving time. Yes, that is a turkey.
Strange that it was in your backyard. Mine it would be normal.

Dee, in the forty plus years I've lived in this house I've never seen a wild turkey. I've been doing some research on them and they look exactly like the one I saw...which is a female. She will lay her eggs under some shrubs. That will give me a good excuse not to clean out the area on one side of my house against my neighbor's stockade fence. LOL Maybe she'll lay them in that area. I'll wait until the fall to do it. Of course if she sees Katie out there she may change her mind and move to a new area although Katie never goes in the area on the side of the house. I have no idea where she came from since this area is pretty well settled although there are still some woods not too far away. I really hope she'll go to a more wooded area where she'll have some privacy. LOL

Hope everyone is well..Beinn is great having some eye problems and sleeping lots but he's my main man.
Tony and Lacey had a bath yesterday, company coming from Canada next Tuesday.

Thanks for your information, Diana. As I mentioned to Dee, I have never seen one here before but it sure looked like some kind of a turkey.

Sorry to hear about Beinn's eye problems. Katie sleeps more now but when she's awake she still likes to play. Right now she's dead to the world in her bed with her head hangong out on the floor. I don't know hwo she can be comfortable that way but she seems to be. LOL

Enjoy your company.

Mary Lou,

Katie is still a puppy in her eyes, she is so awesome and such a card with her bed antics. I think she could be comfortable sleeping anywhere.
Beinn likes to play at home, but at Sue's, Maria keeps her eyes on him so he is afraid to play there. Maria misses him when he goes home but can't stand it when he's there. She is the Queen on guard of everything.
He loves his Mama and we have quality time when I am not at work. He is the boss of the cats, so that makes him important.

Interesting bird for you. We have turkeys in Texas too.
I am sorry Beinn is having eye problems. Trudy has dry eye and takes Cyclosporin daily. Works like a CHARM for her. She used to have "gookies" but not any more.

She sees her dermatologist next week.

I took her on her daily walk this morning. She walked with her Cocker Spaniel buddy, Nutmeg.

Tomorrow is bath day, right after her walk. HOT and humid here, next week will be a bit cooler.

Well, I'm glad Trudy will be able to get her normal bath, Sally. I't pouring here AGAIN so Katie will not see the tub today. I think Katie is praying harder for rain than I am for some sunshine. LOL

You're right, Diana about Katie still being a puppy at heart. Her bed must be made with steel fibers. I can't believe it's lasted this long with not one tear in it. I've heard that Maria is the boss when Beinn is at her house. It's nice that at least Beinn can boss the cats around. LOL

I hope my wild turkey has moved back to its normal habitat. I don't really need a wild turkey around although I would love to see Katie's reaction to it. LOL

Mary Lou, that is weird for you to have a wild turkey in your yard. Interesting no less.
-----

Skaket May 15, 2009 08:22 AM

Phyl, it is weird. The only reason that I can think of is that it was washed out of its normal habitat. I'll have to watch today and see if it returns. It's raining here again.

GARYS May 16, 2009 02:09 PM

We have all kinds of wild animals around our house but no turkeys yet. We have a rabbit that has started to come up on our porch and look in the storm door. It is probably the one who made its nest under a rose bush by our front steps and had 7 babies. Needless to say Becker and Tootles found them and made fast work of 5 of them before we knew they were there. Put up a little fence around the remaining two but they tore it down and had a meal. Bad Tzus! They pay no attention to the adult rabbits and the rabbits don't run from them.

Skaket May 16, 2009 04:48 PM

Gary, I'm really not sure where this turkey came from but with all the heavy rain we've had lately, she may have been driven from her normal home with some flooding. The gentleman who has been taking down my tree told me yesterday that folks saw it walking down the sidewalk. Now, that must have been a sight. LOL Glad it didn't cause any accidents. I haven't seen her today so hopefully she's back home.

Sorry about the baby rabbits. Becker and Tootles probably thought that they were new toys to play with. I've seen a few rabbits in my yard but Katie hasn't seen any yet.

Aw, Gary, poor little rabbits... Makes me think of when Max got the baby bird and killed it. It hurt me so much, but he was just doing what dogs do...

It certainly took me by surprise, Denice. In all the years I've lived here, I've never seen one. I think the poor bird was very confused and hope she made it home ok. LOL
