Al's Vet Visit

fordfal63 May 23, 2009 08:42 AM

Al went in to the vet on Wednesday May 20 to have a cyst removed from his ear and a dental. He came home with many stitches in his ear and 17 teeth missing! I was so surprised, although I should have been prepared for that. It just did not enter my mind that he would have to have teeth pulled. I asked for pain meds for him since I could no one could stay home with him on Thursday and Friday. He is doing well. He is loving the canned food and I plan to continue it for several days before going back to kibble. Temperatures have been in the mid 80's here and I finally broke down and turned on the air conditioning last night. I try to hold out until June 1 before turning it on but it is too hot for sleeping upstairs even with a fan running all night. I am sure Al appreciates the A/C just as much as the humans do. Al will turn 11 on June 11. The rabbits have really been enjoying our yard this year because they know Al will only trot after them and not come close to catching them. Last night there were three rabbits out there and only one scampered off, the other two stayed and munched on the grass.

So glad Al is doing well despite all those extractions Donna. He's not going to want to go back to eating boring old kibble after that lovely special food he's been getting though. Hope he is soon fully recovered and fighting fit again.....you'll know he's OK when he chews up a library book or toilet roll I guess!!

Sue - I think you are right. As soon as Al chews up a book or some TP, I will know he is back to normal!

Donna,
It is good to hear that Al did well at the vet. I waas shocked when Sadie and Jessie had so many teeth extracted when they had their dentals. but I guess it is necessary. It sure didn't slow either of them down with the biskies and kibble. Ohio.. wonderful, isn't it? From 40 to 80 overnight.

Donna, don't worry too much about the missing teeth. You do remember our Nancy Ann,also known as Toothless Nancy? Being without teeth only caused her one problem: I would give her a medium size Milkbone when I gave the others giant ones; she knew the difference and let me know she did; if looks could kill I would have been a goner.

Aww.. poor little guy. But if those teeth were bad or bothering him.. he is going to feel so SO much better. I had a dog lose 14 teeth and she was so much happier with them gone.

Poor baby! I'm sure you're spoiling him enough to make up for it.

Al's birthday is the day before my friend Susan's (you met her in CH)

How is Al doing now? Better I hope. When BoBo lost all but 6 tetth he started eating like there was no tomorrow! It was the best thing for him. I hope Al is doing just as well and chowing on that kibble!

Hi Nancy - I am waiting until 10-12 days to mix kibble in with the soft food. That will be Sat-Mon. He is feeling pretty good, though. Yes, I remember Sue and had forgotten about the birthdays!
