Well it's 8 PM we've been home almost two hours now. It has been a long, interesting, productive, happy day. Harry says 500 miles of driving and he has a tired tushie; me, I'm just tired...supporting 60 lbs of leaning hound for most of 198 miles will do that.
Harry and I left several annoyed folks when we left here at 8:30 this morning ( I don't think Sharon was one of them even if the other five did hold a roo-fest shortly after we left).
Quick back up to explain: A breeder in Tupelo had a 22 month old girl who, according to him, would rather play than chase a lure, so he brought her home from the track and started getting her ready to come to our adoption group. Before she came down to Jackson today he had GiveMeSomeSugar spayed, all shots brought up to date, a dental done as well as her flea meds and heartworm meds...at his expense; thereby saving GPA-LA/MS a bundle. We met the breeder's wife at the Target in north Jackson this morning about 9:00 to get Sugar; she cried when she gave Sugar to us. Miss Sugar is a petite, red fawn girl with perfect eyeliner (visualize Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, without the eye shadow); her muzzle and tail are black "frosted". All in all a beautiful girl and as sweet as her name. Now back to the day. We took Sugar down to Lesley (who posts here when she has time) at our group's transition kennel in Pearl River, LA. As I hinted earlier Sugar leans. She would have perfered to lean on Harry from the front seat but settled for leaning on my arm which was stretched across the space between our seats...in fact my hand was in the storage pocket on the back of Harry's seat. First half complete.
After a really nice, much to short visit at Lesley's we left at 1:00 P.M. with Etch, a big fawn girl who retired a month ago at age five. I do mean a big girl too...for those who remember our Vinka, Etch is bigger. Actually, she is a tall eighty pounder and perfect at that weight. We drove to the Mississippi Welcome Center at Vicksburg and met most of Etch's new family. Mom, Dad, and four year old skinsister came from Shreveport to pick her up; the eighteen month old sister stayed with a sitter since Rachel and her husband thought that would be better for Etch. It was love at first sight (shocking, right?). They have had two Shar-Peis, litter mates who they lost within a six month period after several years so the little girl wasn't uneasy around a large dog and petted Etch almost as soon as she saw her and the little one at home has already learned to pet gently. Etch will soon be spoiled rotten.
We gave them one of Harry's Greyhound business cards and I asked if they would prefer a magnet. Rachel's husband grinned and quickly said "yes". He said that they'd probably lose a card and that putting the magnet on the fridge would make it easier to find when they needed to call or e-mail with questions. He said he was an accountant and knew he'd have questions because he didn't know Greyhounds. Don't you love someone who's smart enough to ask questions?
He and Harry got Etch into the back of their Tahoe SUV where there was a pillow and a light blanket for her. Oh, and we gave them a copy of "Retired Racing Greyhounds for DUMMIES". Second half complete.
We drove back, picked up Kentucky Grilled for dinner and got home to Richland just after 6:00 P.M. As I said earlier a long, interesting, productive, happy day.
