Puppy Likes to eat her own poop....?

LemonLola May 27, 2009 05:16 PM

I just started a similar thread in the 'Beagle' forum, but it doesn't look very active. So, I decided to ask the same question here in the 'open discussion' section.

I just got a (lemon) beagle puppy, and she likes to eat her own poop. She's still pretty young, about 8 weeks old currently. We feed her alot, so it's not like she gets very little food. But, on multiple occasions, she has taken a dump, then turned around and ate it immediately.

Whenever somebody is with her, it's no problem to clean it up before she eats it. But, we all work 8-5 jobs and we can't be there all day. So, there is a period of time when she is by herself, and we can't stop her from eating it, if she does poop.

Is there anything we can do to get her to stop this? Is this just a phase puppies go through?

Any tips or tricks would be highly appreciated. Thank you

(also... this pic below is her. she's a cutie, huh?)

What an adorable Pup!

As far as eating their poop. I have yet to find anyone including a vet to explain that mystery. Although I have been told by several people that if you put just a tiny bit of meat tenderizer, you can get this at the grocery store, on their food sometime that helps. They say it breaks down something in the poop that dog love. Also very important check with your vet first before doing this. Has your pup been to the vet and checked for worms. Sometimes that can cause this problem.
