first tank....need suggestions

mbmcewen Oct 10, 2003 07:02 PM

This is my first tank and I need some suggestions on filling it up. I have about 6 species of plant in there and really don't want to clutter it up, but feel like I need more. I have bromeliads and resurrection fern on the background. I have a lemon button fern, a goldfish plant, and one I cant remember the name of in the rear left corner. I also have a creek running out of the big driftwood log with the crack in it...it is not running yet of course

The background looks a little bare....what can I attach to it that might hang down and creep over it eventually?

I just need some opinions.

Thanks,

-----
Matt

looks good. for the driftwood, since you have water running on it, why not some java moss?

i think you have to much wide open space. I would add a larger brom specie on the right hand said (the side of the co-co hut).

and maybe a mediuem sized brom on the left hand side on the background. or some sorta background plant.

Looks good maybe put a couple of air plants on the drift wood and on the background maybe some orchids that cascade down the back wall as well. Check out black jungle they have a lot of good stuff and they are also really good pricing wise and extremely helpful as well.
hope this helps.

You have a huge amount of backwall space for various epiphytic vines. Check out www.cloudjungle.com for a great selection. Harry sells mostly epiphytic plants at great prices.

Ahh, now see Dave you let the cat out of the bag. But I guess we owe it to Harry to send him the business. Glad I wiped out his dischidia stock last month.

I just sent him a tentative order for next week, which includes a Lecanopteris...

I thought about the Lecanopteris but the wife wasn't too keen on it since I've spent quite a bit on plants lately. Heliamphora Minor, a couple Cephalotus and some Pleurothallis put a hurt on the plant budget last month.
Let me know how you like the Lecanopteris.

So far it looks good. Looks like you could use some moss on the right side, and maybe a creeping ficus, or somthing to cover the back. After they get gowing they will cover the back very fast.

What did you use for the back? Looks like peat and somehting, but what did you use to bond it?

Also the tank looks a little dry, make sure you mist it well before adding any frogs.

The tank is still dry because I want to make very sure that the concrete bonder has cured. Concrete bonder is what I mixed with the peat/coco mix. I definitely want something more on the background. I have put two more res. ferns on it but would like some vines to grow down instead of up.

The reason I didnt plant moss on the right side is for mushrooms. I mixed in about 2 cups of diced up caps i collected on a camping trip. Now, I just need time to let everything fill in

Cool, post back if the mushroom thing works... What what is the brand info on the concrete stuff you used?

it's made by quikrete. I got it at Home Depot in the building materials section....close to the roofing shingles and stuff. It's called Quikrete concrete bonding adhesive

I read in an earlier post that concrete bond won't do well underwater, but marine epoxy will do great.

everything points to epoxy, but it is not cheap and not easy to work with. I might try the winterstone and then seal it, who knows. I want to build my 4 tanks stand first.

I believe the plant you cannot remember the name of is a species of Wild Ginger (Asarum). I am a real plant freak and I have united so to speack. I don't have Dart Frogs (yet) but I look around these forums some. I an a freshman at NC State University where I am studying Botany. I cannot have pets in the dorm but next year I will be off campus so I am thinking about setting up a tank for some Dendrobates next summer. Hope this helps out. BTW, the plants look alright.
