Back to the vets again

deetu Jun 05, 2009 09:05 PM

Ayla would kinda scoot-sit from one place to another. Her little bottom looked red, like hot water was poured on it. The vet's office said they had a spray but it was back ordered but they had shampoo to take care of it and maybe her anal glands were bothering her... which I was thinking too.

So, smelly comes out smelling worse because they sprayed grooming cologne(which I can't handle in itself)on top of smelly anal glands And they said she didn't need the medicated shampoo and off we go. Had to give her a whole bath to get the cologne off... yuck. Sally knows what I mean, right?

Now poor pup's butt is still sore and she goes to the wee wee pad and lays on it looking at me. (I wanted to ask if I could use Zinc Oxide on her but forgot and couldn't find anything on the net so I used Neosporin instead.) I took her outside and had her follow me up and down the driveway (it's dark out there) to loosen her up. She squatted and peed outside!

She was back on the wee wee pad looking at me so a little later I'll bring her outside again to see if we can get the poop out of her. Poor little thing.

I am not sure I understand, did they express the anal glands sounds like they are full? A spray isn't going to fix that.

They expressed the anal glands then tried to cover up the smell with sweet smelling after grooming spray instead of just sticking her in a tub and rinsing her butt.

They had a medicated spray for the soreness of the skin around her bottom but were out of it so offered medicated shampoo but then said I didn't need it because her anal glands were pretty full and they felt that was the problem.
After I got home, she is still acting sore. I think she wants to poo but is afraid to. I have been taking her outside to walk up and down the driveway to get her loosened up. Walks usually make her poop. She is sitting on her wee wee pad right now, crying to get my attention. (not crying in pain)

Denice, is there anything else I can do to help her? I don't want to feed her anything that may mess up her system again.

childrens suppositories of glycerin. Put into the microwave for a sec to get soft, roll a Q tip into the glycerin and use around her anus and just inside it will make it easier for her to go.

I have children's suppositories for the baby goats... I was looking at them, wondering if they go bad because I've had them for a few years.
Actually, I've been giving her the pumpkin and taking her for a walk. The walk usually does it but she jumps into the grass and I have picked a few deer ticks off of her. She pooped on the wee wee pad again so I think we are fine again.
Thanks

I'm glad to hear that things are going well again, Dee. Oh dear, it's tick time again. I've never seen one here in CT where I live but there are loads of them at the Cape.

Aw, poor thing! It wasn't her anal glands? Ouch.

Oh, yes, Trudy has to stay away from heavy perfume. I groom her at home.

Once, at a Bed and B.fast, Trudy and I could not sleep all one night. They had HEAVY lavendar dryer sheets or whatever used.

I was ON FIRE, itching. Trudy too! Horrible. We still stay there, but they do not use that anymore.

After that night, I know how dogs feel when they have allergies and itching etc.

It was her anal glands, that's why she was stinky. She wasn't scooting her butt but kinda running and sitting... as if someone snuck up on her while she was sleeping and pulled her tail.

When we went to Disney, we stayed outside the resort at Comfort in. I asked them to clean only with vinegar because of my allergy problems. The manager said fine and asked me if I wanted the laundry put through the wash a second time without detergent! I said great but when I got there, you could smell that they used chemicals to clean. I usually bring my own vinegar now and go over everything. I seems to neutralize the chemical odors. I even spray it over the spreads.

People think I'm crazy the way I wipe everything with sanitary wipes but housekeeping doesn't clean everything. I wipe the remote, telephone, light switches and door knobs. I also don't put anything in drawers, keeping stuff in my suitcase but using the hangers. And I take the top cover totally off. Think about it, they don't get washed.

I called the vet this morning just in case. She said that when she expressed the anal gland she didn't feel anything unusual.. not a hard wall. (she puts her finger in to express) She also said that she didn't feel overfull when she checked to not worry.

So I was told to give pumkin and in about 30 minutes, we went for a walk and out it came. It was funny because she would walk a bit, twist and look at her tail, walk some more, twist and look at her tail, sit down.

Sooo, can I freeze some of this pumkin just in case for the future? I think I'll look for some kind of bread receipe to use up the rest.

Oh, that's so good to hear, Dee. I have to make an appointment to take Katie in for her annual visit. She's doing just fine but I still get nervous at her age of fourteen.

Dee, I just finished reading all the posts about poor little Ayla. Bless her heart! She has really been through an ordeal; as well as YOU! I pray all is well now and will be from now on!

I am not sure about saving pumpkin. I know you can also use dark karo syrup and it keeps rather easily. Works the same.
