Is Kibble All it's Put Out to Be?

colorfulcritters Jun 14, 2009 07:53 AM

Is kibble essential for dogs? If so, what does the more expensive kibble like Science Diet really offer and that which I can't but buy for cheaper?

I mean, I've bought a few cheap brands lately due to the fact I couldn't make ends meet. Yet a cheaper brand I bought seems to give them healthier looking feces. Science Diet came out wrong. They take to the cheaper stuff more readily too.

So I'm wondering. Is the more expensive kibble really worth it? Or should you just go with whatever you're dog prefers?

Expensive kibble doesn't always mean great- yet- cheap isn't always the best either.

Each dog is different and handles foods differently in their systems. For my older dog with food allergies I can feed her the most expensive food on the planet and can pretty much guarantee she'll do poorly on it and my vet bills will skyrocket.

I personally don't like "grocery store brands" because they tend to have a lot of corn/wheat/rice parts and strange oil fillers with little meat or only meat by products. There are some wonderful mid priced kibbles out there that use real meat, real carbohydrates (not carbohydrate parts) and better quality fats in their foods. For me, it's what's on the label that allows me to choose a decent food and not necessarily the price tag.

What you want is a food that supplies all of the nutrients your dog needs whether it is kibble, canned, homemade or raw (if you know what you're doing). A lot of your cheaper dog foods are made with corn, wheat, soy to which a lot of dogs have allergies to or are intolerant of. And by-products are in cheaper foods too. What dogs need is meat mainly so I look for meat as the first and preferably the first two ingredients. I don't want to see by-products or corn, etc. If I were you you I would buy the best food I could afford for my dog.
