Question

I was wondering what you all thought about walking the babies in hot weather. How hot is too hot? If you must walk on asphalt, would you do it in the morning or evening?
What are your thoughts?

Phyl, if I had a choice, I think I would try and walk in the morning before the asphalt has had a chance to heat up. We've had so much rain here that it hasn't had a chance to really heat up yet. In the morning, I take Katie out to the front lawn to take care of business. I try to take her to different areas though so I won't have big yellow spoots in the lawn. LOL In the morning, she's not real fussy so she'll go anywhere. <G> As far as the temp. goes, to a certain degree, I go by how hot I am. Of course Katie is kept in a short coat so that helps some.

Mary Lou, I agree that the morning would be better before the sun has a chance to heat up the surface. I think sometimes even in the evening, the pavement would still be too hot. Thanks

Phyl
My rule of thumb is to keep outings very short in hot weather and to check the surface with the palm of my hand, if it is too hot to put your hand down it is too hot for the dogs.

Good idea for checking, Denice. I know that during the hot summer months I can't walk on my driveway with my bare feet.

It is too hot to walk at all right now. I get very ill in the heat.

On a normal summer day, it is good to go in the morning when the cement is cool. In the evening, just feel with your hands and feet and check the cement. Also, they have short noses so heat is hard for them.

A short walk is fun and they don't get too hot that way.

I always wash Trudy's feet to keep the house clean and for allergies. It is good in summer to cool her off also.
