American bulldogs are pits?

Martell Jul 07, 2009 08:11 PM

I currently own an American bulldog. I am stationed at Malmstrom air force base and they have told me I can't have my American bulldog on base because they made a rule saying no pit bulls. Is there anything I can say or do to convince the base housing that my dog is not a pit. He is registered with NKC and I have all the papers saying he is an American bulldog and not a pit. but they wont even listen to what I have to say. I have been all over the internet and everyone defends their American bulldogs saying they have nothing to do with pits except occasionally resemble them. is there any truth to it or are American bulldogs classified as pit bulls? I have read that pit bulls are pits for the terrier in them is there any truth to that as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The laws are always subjective. American Bulldog and American Pit Bull Terrier are two very different breeds. The base breeds for AB are along the Mastiff Lines and the base breed for the APBT is terrier. Both share a history of the bulldog, but that is WAY back in lines. The lineage of American Bulldog is more closer to the Boxer and the Mastiff than that of an APBT.

Get an DNA test done NOW. I always suggest Biopet, because it is a true DNA company. DNA results may be of help to you.

Some places will assist with boarding or fostering serviceman animals. I assume you live on base, and I do not know if it is feesable to move off base, but that is another option. I do realize on base housing is far cheaper, but if the law is written "Pit bull or any breed that resembles pit bull" you may be out of luck.

However on that note, thank you for your service. Check with the folks at PBRC to see if you can find anything specific. I do however vaguely remember this is a military wide ruling to ban these breeds.
