Question about prehensile tailed skinks

jrbl Oct 10, 2003 07:54 PM

I have had prehensile tailed skinks in the past and I have had a question that I have had for a long time. When I had them, they alwas went to the bathroom in in their soaking dish. What is with that? I had a pair and they each did this at least once a day., so I had to clean the water bowl at least twice a day. HAs anyone else had this happen? THanks, jrbl

My iguanas do that, my Blue Tongue Skinks do that, My Uro does that, my Crocodile Skink does that, my salamanders do that, my tortoises do that, even my Gecko does that once in a while!I think you should be happy your PTSs used to do that every day! That showed that they were eating well and well digesting their food! Im happy when my PTS poops in his water bowl because that shows he is eating and i dont mind cleaning his bowl!By the way, its easier to clean a bowl of water than the whole cage!lol!

By the way, what happened to your babies?

PS: My BEARDED never poops in his bowl of water! He prefers to do that on my lap!lol!

Thanks for the reply. I am glad it was not just me. I had my skinks years ago when I was a teenager. They were the first reptiles I had actually ever bought. I hate myself for this but they died.THey were a very bad choice for a begginer. I took good care of them, but I think a heater would have been a good idea for their cage. They died the first winter in the year I got them. I should never have got them, as a kid, in the first place, but because I had them, I have an undying love for these little guys. I want to get some more now that I am not a dumb kid and also to breed them. I hope to get three, but I really want CB and they are like $250 each for Cb. Though I think CB would be worth it in vet bills(mine were sick when I got them). Thanks again, jrbl

I definitely agree that it's much easier to clean a water dish than an entire terrarium! I also think that this only reaffirms just how clean reptiles are. Even a lot of our snakes tend to defecate in their water bowls. One only needs to observe our lizards and/or snakes for a while to realize how clean these animals are. Their behavior dictates it -- lift tail, defecate, move away while tail is lifted, and move on. They really are very clean. It's up to us to keep up with cleaning their environment.

Whenever we want to take one of our iguanas out for some "social time", all we need to do is put them in a tub of water and wait... inevitably, they will defecate, then we are assured that they will not do it on our sofa or our rug... Not sure if this applies with *all* other reptiles, but we have noticed this behavior with some of our other reptiles as well... It has proven to be very convenient. LOL
