When are Shiba's considered "Seniors"

kona63 Jul 20, 2009 06:47 AM

Ok so both Kona and Kiko are going to be 8 yrs old this October and I was wondering when are Shiba's considered seniors? I am thinking about there diet and such. There are still a ton of days when they both still act like pups.

Dave that is a great question! I wonder if anyone really knows? We already know their expected life spans but also know that they can go years beyond that. Beni is 11˝... Keiko could be just as old and Toshi is also 8. From their antics they still act like young dogs but also perhaps a little quieter.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

I don't think I can answer that fully. I know Kita is starting to show her age (almost 10) because she's losing her hearing and I can tell she's not as spry as she used to be- can't run as fast as Taiko and tires out a bit easier. Taiko at 7 is not showing any signs of aging.

I did the major diet change with all the recall stuff and have been thrilled with the results I've gotten from that. I don't think I'd change anything unless I see they need a change. So if Kita's coat were looking dull or she was gaining or losing weight again, I'd adjust things.

The other shiba in my area that I know well is also almost 10 and just starting to slow down a tiny bit, but only because I know him can I tell that. He still does 5 mile walks without being winded. You can just see it a bit on the face where he's getting more white.

That means Niko with be 5....

I've started noticing Artemis' age since she turned six. She's getting more white in the face and doesn't do as many shiba 500s, but she can still chase a chipmunk with everything in her and pounces like a pro.

I wouldn't change their diet, either, unless you see a physical need for it.
